Unclaimed Ashes and the Stories They Hold

Across New Zealand, funeral homes are quietly entrusted with the care of thousands of unclaimed ashes. Each vessel represents a life lived with memories and connections that deserve recognition. While headlines recently highlighted the scale of unclaimed ashes held at a West Auckland funeral home, the truth is this is a tender reality faced by many families and communities.

At H Morris Funeral Services here on the North Shore, we know this responsibility well. In our own care we hold nearly 100 sets of ashes, lovingly stored in what we call our ‘corridor of souls’. For us, it is not just a storage place, it is a space of remembrance where we are continually working to reconnect families with their loved ones.

Why Ashes Go Unclaimed

There are many reasons why ashes may remain uncollected. Sometimes families move away, lose touch, or face difficult circumstances. In other cases, grief or uncertainty can make it hard to decide on a final resting place. What never changes is our commitment to safeguarding those entrusted to us until the time comes when families are ready.

Our Ongoing Commitment

At H Morris, our purpose is clear: honouring life and celebrating memories for generations. This extends to every person in our care whether their ashes are collected immediately or remain with us for years. Guided by our values of integrity, respect, and community focus, we see it as a privilege to safeguard these memories and wherever possible, reunite them with the families who hold them dear.
